Great starter skate for kidsSep 02, 2010
By J. Carter I bought these for my daughter (age 4, size Y11 shoe) and they work great. I've skated for about 20 years and used to teach kids to skate, so I'm tremendously pleased to be teaching my own kid this time.
The boot is a mix of soft shoe and stiff plastic around the heel and ankle. It looks comfortable, much better than the all-plastic boots that typified early inline skates. My daughter doesn't complain about the skates hurting at all.
I'm doubtful that the laces are useful. I removed them. Between the heel strap and ankle buckle there's plenty to keep this skate secure on the feet.
Contrary to other reviewers, I believe the skates fit true to size. I've got the skates dialed to Y11, same as my daughter's shoe size, and they fit perfectly. Note that most kids wearing skates wear them much too large! When standing, the skate should look like an extension of the leg, there should not be side-to-side play.
Wheels are fine, they're on the small side of course (72mm) and hardness (durometer) is appropriate for outdoor skating. They've got plenty of grip on typical asphalt surfaces. My daughter has no problems with slipping due to the wheels losing grip.
My one criticism, and this is more a difference of opinion than a quality issue, is that I think the smaller skates should have a three wheel frame instead of four. On the smallest size skate, the frame is long enough relative to the boot that it's comparable to a speed skate. This makes it very stable at speed, but has the disadvantage of giving the skater very little leverage on the heel brake. Rollerblade used to make a three wheel skate for kids back in the 90's; now nobody does.
The heel brake looks like a standard Rollerblade brake and therefore should be easy to find replacements for. I doubt kids will have enough weight to burn through brakes quickly, however. (I mow through them, but I'm 170lbs.) I consider a heel brake essential to skating in urban environments; the alternative is trashing your wheels with power stops, and I'd rather trash a brake than my wheels.
Note that this skate does *not* come with an extra axle for the brake wheel, so you can't remove the heel brake even if you want to. (The axle used for the brake wheel is longer than the rest.) Most skates come with an extra regular-length axle to give you the option of removing the brake. I'm indifferent on this, however, seeing as I'd keep the brake on there.

sizing flawJan 09, 2010
By sharon These skates seem to be good enough quality, however I feel there is a MAJOR flaw in sizing. My 8 yr old daughter wears a size 1 1/2 shoe. I ordered the 1-4 size so she could use them for a while. They are barely long enough even when extended all the way to "4". I won't be getting my money's worth out of these.

Sizing is wrongJan 30, 2010
By Aaron Simmer I bough the size 1-4 for my daughter who wears a size 3 normally and these skates would barely fit her foot. I would go to the next size in the skates.

Sizes aren't accurateOct 21, 2010
By I -Thought I bought one pair for my daughter, thinking that they would last for a while. I read some of the reviews saying that the size may not be accurate. Her feet were ~12, I thought 11-1 size would be sufficient and would last at least a year or two. Guess what! They didn't last more than half a year. She complained that they are too tight, so I readjusted and re-readjusted to the maximum size 1. Yet still she complains about them. Particularly, her feet may be a bit wide and that may be the reason why she complains. The skate shell looks tad narrow to me. I will be looking for a replacement in the near future. Otherwise, they run smoothly.
Wheels Just okMay 14, 2012
By Jon Stewart My niece was very excited to receive these as a gift. They look great, fit well, but the wheels are a bit loud and don't seem to give the same ride as some of the others I used to rid when I was a kid. That was the only complaint of mine, but she had a blast.
